Coaching and Surf Schools

Operational Statement January 2012

Surfing GB aims to promote safe and successful surf coaching which encourages progression for all levels of ability. It will do this by creating a register of all surf schools and coaches who meet a set of requirements embracing high standards of operation and safety.

Coaches

• All coaches operating in the registered surf schools will have recognized surf coaching and current water safety qualifications.

• For 2012, the recognized coaching awards are:
  • ISA Surf Coach
  • ASI Surf Coach
  • BSA Level 1 and above (validity of this set of awards will be extended to the end of 2012 for coaches who register with Surfing GB)

• During 2012, coaching workshops and seminars will be held to discuss amendments and developments which will help maintain high standards into the future from January 2013.

• All coaches must register with Surfing GB.

Surf Schools

• Surf schools registering with Surfing GB will have access to the database of registered surf coaches
• Surf schools registering with Surfing GB may retain the grading given by the previous National Governing Body (BSA) or Surfing GB until the end of 2012.
• Specific surf school insurance will be available to all registered surf schools
• Surf school registration will be subject to meeting specified requirements (BSA 2010 or Surfing GB 2011)
• Each surf school will receive one agreed inspection visit by the end of May 2012 and one additional unplanned visit by the end of August 2012.

• A group will be set up to rationalise and improve the surf schools structure for implementation in 2013.
