The second part of a very busy weekend for organisers Christian Surfers UK was the eighth running of the very popular Jesus longboard classic. Ever since its inception a new event breaking away from the Jesus Surf Classic ( Due to the size of the event ) it has been held at the beautiful coastal town of Polzeath.

With over 50 long boarders registered, a warm welcome breakfast and hot Coffee at the base (Tubestation) the contest got underway with some good clean lines as the tide began to drop. From the very start all heats were very competitive, although always taking place with the right spirit that the longboard community always seems to provide.

With the Christian Surfers team split over two events on this day, BLU head judge Bob Freshwater was employed to give guidance over the event, and worked closely with the contest director Johnny Hillman, and CS judges.

With the dropping tide and increased wind the conditions were worst at around midday, before pushing again on the afternoon big spring tide.

In the water in the ladies contest Emily Currie surfed really strongly again to retain her trophy ahead of Katrina Beddoe from St Columba major and South coast’s Claire Smail and Charlotte Baylis.

Emily also surfed really well in the Juniors final but fell short of Barnstaple’s Ashley Wright and Westward Ho’s Jack Unsworth who took the title for the second year running.

The Masters competition had the highest in number of entrants and had a huge range of ages from mid-30s right up to 60s, which meant a great competition throughout, but in the end ‘young’ Sam Bleakley took the title ahead of Ilfracombe’s John Hiscock, Wales’s Colin Bright and Taunton’s Rob Davin.

The final heat of the day took place around 5 PM with some good waves coming through for the Open final, and all surfers performing well, but on this occasion Connor Griffiths just pipped Sennens James Parry to the title, and along with it a cheque for £250. Sam Bleakly remained busy taking third just ahead of Greg Norman from Appledore.

As always at this competition the, the atmosphere around the Tube station was always first-class, and a huge thank you to the staff there who  laid on breakfast and also pasties or lunch.

Whilst the competition was over in one day many of the surfers remained overnight in the area and attended the traditional ‘Surfers blessing’ which this year was on the theme of ‘There is hope’, following on from the loss of some significant surf community friends over the last year.

Surfers were once again given breakfast, and offered the opportunity to reflect by lighting a candle and finally a blessing for those that wanted. Quite a powerful and moving reflection.

Once again Christian Surfers and Tubestation would like to thank all those that attended, entered and volunteered throughout a busy day. In particular the huge thanks to founding sponsor Nineplus, and supporting sponsors Finisterre, and exciting new sponsor this year Riz Boardshorts, and of course Christian Surfers UK. Also a big thanks to Era adventures and the team providing water cover, and Connor Griffiths was also handed an amazing portrait of himself on silver plate by local photographer  Nick Reader. Finally want to thank  the surfers of Polzeath who gave the competition plenty of space to perform, and God for the waves needed to run the event.
