2014 Acer British Interclub Surfing Championships
Croyde Bay, Devon. September 20th & 21st.
As an organisation run by Surfers for Surfers, we love the Interclubs and all the values it upholds, it’s a pure and open celebration of everything that is great about Great Britians Surf Club scene. This years event was hosted by Croyde Surf club, brought to you by Surfing GB & sponsored by the technological wizards at Acer, and will now be know as one of the best in the events history.
Forecasters predicted sunshine, light offshore winds & an almighty ground swell to push in during the weekend, unfortunately this didn’t quite arrive in time to see any competitive surfing on day 1 of this 2 day event. Instead, day 1 became a day of activities, with junior Interclub tag team racing & an open team beach flag sprints with a difference (swop the flags for cans of Korev beer & you get the idea). As our sound system’s entertained the crowds ears, surfers & supporters kicked back on the Surfdome sun loungers & giant bean bags, whilst CSC flipped the burgers and all enjoyed a day of chilling with mates in the beautiful surroundings of North Devonshire Croyde Bay.
Saturday evening was always going to be a big event, however the magnitude of it will likely go down in Croyde’s history books. We were honoured to enlist the service of Duplex Sound, sure to be a future star of the DJ world & recent favourite of Radio 1 DJ’s, to drop beats and entertain the crowds. Billy Budds pub played host and it was a truly crazy party, enough said.
Early check in on Sunday was called to ensure a full day of surfing and to get the most out of the dreamy conditions at Costa Del Croyde. Conditions lined up perfectly for the day, “we were greeted to the beach by blue skies, offshore winds & clean 2-3ft sets rolling into the bay, the swell had arrived, better late than never” said Contest Director Pauly Jeffrey. Competition got underway and to the surprise of most people, surfers had actually made it on time for their heats after last night’s party.
The Open division saw some impressive surfing from top UK Surfers such as Bude’s Jobe Harris & Liam Turner, Isle Of Wight Johnny Fryer, Croyde’s Will Bailey & Boscombes Gordon Fontaine, whilst friendly battles played out in the water between old and new friends and rivals. The Women were next to take to the water with Croyde’s Peony Knight, Karma Worthington & Flora Lawton strutting their stuff and taking the heat wins and maximum points for their team. Despite the forecast for the swell to drop slightly, the relentless a-frames and 6-8 wave sets rolled in and broke in perfect harmony across the bay. The Junior division took full advantage of the conditions with solid performances and heat wins for Croydes Will Bailey, Bude’s Kit Innes & Boscombe’s Oscar Johnson.

Ultimately, Croyde Surf Club used home advantage and excellent team surfing abilities to take the wins and a clean sweep across all categories, and as such also retained their overall Interclub Champions title! In keeping with the unique nature of the event, it’s all about individual performances as part of a team, but there is more to it than simple placing’s.
This year Acer sponsored the event with Touch Screen Tablets with their new Iconia A1 product. These were then awarded to the clubs that showed the most dedication, the most improved & also those displaying outstanding sportsmanship. The Isle of Wight team showed up in style and took the well-deserved ‘most dedicated’ award, Boscombe Boardriders rightfully took the ‘most improved award’ for their teams efforts, whilst Jak Smith & the South East Cornwall Surf Club took the ‘sportsmanship’ award after rescuing swimmers stuck in a rip after his heat.
Surfing GB would like to thanks Acer for their continued support of British Surfing, as well as Surfdome, Posca Pens, Calypso Soft Drinks, Park Dean Holidays & St Austell Brewery for their support and sponsorship of the event. Thanks also to all the staff & Croyde Surf Club with their volunteers for making the event possible.
