British Junior Squad – Portugal Training Camp
After settling in to camp and getting familiar with the waves in front of the High Performance Surfing Centre yesterday (www.surfingviana.com), day two was all about setting benchmarks. Head coach Lloyd Cole and assistant coach Damon Beveridge outlined the running order for the day and what they expect to see from the squad this week. For the surfers, the first full day was their opportunity to put down an early marker and show exactly what they have to offer with all aspects of their performance.
With an early low mist failing to clear while the squad had breakfast, the squad went straight into the classroom for an introduction session. With a lot of new members joining the squad this year, it was good to hear everyone’s surfing history and background. When the mist still had failed to lift when the squad finished in the classroom, Damo took everyone for a run to the gym. After running through an extensive warm up routine, everyone completed an intensive functional strength and conditioning circuit’s session. With everyone focused and physically prepared when the squad left the gym at late morning, the sun had burned through so everyone was able to suit up and head to the beach to surf.
The surf was much cleaner than the first afternoon when we arrived, but with a low tide and still a large amount of swell, everyone headed to the north end of the beach to surf off the end of the breakwater. Two good sessions were completed at this location with a short lunch break in between. With conditions changing rapidly on the incoming tide, the surf went from double up bowls to slow running reforms. It was important to be able to adapt your surfing to the conditions quickly and effectively. There were an encouraging amount of surfers who were able to do this and some impressive early displays of ability were show.
The first full day came to a close with a celebration of Lloyds 30th birthday at dinner. Stoked that everyone had visibly committed 100% to the day, Lloyd shared out his birthday cake as a reward for everyone’s commitment. If everyone continues to improve on the benchmark that they set today, the rest of the week will be extremely exciting.
Over and out…
