British Junior Squad – Portugal Training Camp
The British Junior Surfing Squad has been busy enjoying one of the best winters in the UK for waves in decades. Low pressures have been cueing up in the Atlantic to batter our coastline with storm force swells. Our best junior surfers have spent Christmas and new year surfing and training at home in preparation for the upcoming ISA World Surfing Games to be held in Ecuador in April.
For the next week, the squad will be stepping up their preparations at a training camp in Portugal. Thanks to the continued support the squad has received from Calypso Soft Drinks and their Aqua Juice brand (www.aquajuice.co.uk) the Surfing GB squad have traveled to Portugal where they will be based at the High Performance Surfing Centre at Cabadelo beach, Viana (www.surfingviana). The center is a state of the art facility built specifically for the training and development of surfers. Offering classrooms, dormitories and a gymnasium all situated under one roof directly on the beach, the center will provide the squad with the perfect training environment to improve all aspects of their surfing performance.
Assembling 20 of the UK’s best young surfers from across the globe is no easy task. With surfers traveling from all over the UK, as well as from as far afield as Indonesia and South Africa, the camp wouldn’t have been possible without the support of some key sponsors. Off Sure travel insurance have provided everyone traveling to Portugal with full-specialised travel insurance (www.offsuresurf.co.uk). Robie Robes (www.robierobes.com) Posca (www.posca.com/uk) and Sherwin Engineering have all sponsored the squad and gone a long way with ensuring that the camp could go ahead.
After a long day of travel, everyone is now settled in to their new base. The squad have enjoyed their first afternoon surfing the break in front of the center and getting familiar with their new environment. Under the guidance of Head Coach Lloyd Cole and Assistant Coach Damon Beveridge the surfers will be pushed hard over the next 6 days. They will all need to be completely focused and committed to their performance. The week will conclude with the selection of the team of 15 surfers who will go on to represent Team GB at the ISA World Junior Surfing Games in Ecuador.
Keep up to date with their progress here
