The award-winning Wave Project is set to launch three new surf club branches in Cornwall this spring after trebling in size in less than a year.
The club will open branches in West Cornwall, mid-Cornwall and North Cornwall, which will deliver a free surfing session once a week in the summer season. Sessions are free of charge for young people who have completed a Wave Project course, and individual support is provided for members who need it.
It is hoped that this will enable the Wave Project to meet the soaring demand for the club, which has increased three-fold in size over the past year.
Wave Project spokesman Joe Taylor said: “It has been amazing how many young people have joined the club this year. When we launched in 2012, our aim was to provide one session a month for young people who had completed one of our therapeutic courses. Now we are trying to cater for over 120 members, many of whom want to go surfing every week. And because we offer one to one support, we have to make sure we have enough staff available for each session. It’s a big logistical challenge.”
Mr Taylor said that the surf club aims to be able to deliver a weekly session in the local area of every member. “A lot of our members want to take part in surfing as regularly as possible, but traveling from Penzance to Bude, for example, is just too far to go. By having a regular surf club session in their local area, they will be able to go every week.”
The Wave Project Surf Club started in March 2012 as an offshoot of the Wave Project courses, which run across Cornwall and North Devon in spring and autumn. It has its own committee made up of parents and young people who take part in the sessions. The club is funded by BBC Children In Need, as well as local charitable trusts such as the West Cornwall Youth Trust.
Club chairman Sharron Adams said: “This is a really positive development for the surf club, and I hope it will mean more young people can access a weekly surf session.”
