Discovery Surf School Host Inaugural South Devon School Surf Contest

Discovery Surf School hosted a surfing competition for South Devon Schools on Wednesday the 2nd of October at Bigbury on-Sea with over 80 children competing from 6 different schools.

IMG_6359Discovery Surf School have taught over 20 schools during 2013, so it was a natural next step to invite them back for a free competition day, where the children could put their skills to the test.  The format of the day was very much aimed to promote teamwork, with the main part of the competition done as a tag team.  There was also an opportunity for a boy, girl and teacher from each school to compete in a standard heat format, so more points could be won for each school.

Martin Connolly, who runs Discovery Surf School was delighted with how well the day went; “Our school customers are very important to us and we really wanted to give something back to them, where the children could use their surfing skills to compete against other schools from the area.  The team element ensured that the event was inclusive and children of all abilities competed; they had loads of fun as well as getting competitive!”IMG_6428

“We think it’s really important to encourage children to get involved, and we’d like to thank the teachers who put in a massive effort to get everyone down. We were lucky on the day that the weather and surf worked in our favour and there was a real carnival feel on the beach.”

Teacher Mark Capps, of winning school Kingsbridge added “We have some highly talented juniors at the college who compete nationally, but these surfers had a fun day surfing alongside those who were competing for the first time. The tag team format meant everyone had a positive experience and it was pleasing to see how much new talent is coming through. It was great to get together with other teachers and students from other schools and our children really enjoyed it!” IMG_6211

This was the first event of its kind, and Discovery Surf School plan to organise more school, primary school, as well as University and College competitions.  They already host an annual Surf Club competition for the Discovery Surf Club members and other local children and a fun ‘foamy fest’.   The date for that competition is already in the diary for the 9th and 10th of November.IMG_6478
