SGB/ISA Coaching Overview May 2013

Croyde_left

Surfing GB (SGB) has been working with the International Surfing Association (ISA) to consolidate the situation relating to awards for surf coaching in Great Britain and has developed a strategy which will come into force during the late Spring of 2013. This approach is designed to afford holders of existing surf coaching awards the opportunity to be part of a shared vision for the future of surf coaching:

  • ISA Level 1 Surf Coach will have additional elements added to become the standard basic surf coach award for GB. This award will be known as the Joint ISA/SGB Level 1 Surf Coach Award.
    • The additional elements will be: Normal Operation Procedures, Emergency Action Plans, SGB Operating Procedures, Child Protection, ABC Lesson Plan and the Junior Surfer Scheme.
    • All levels (1, 2, 3 & 4) Surf Coaches with qualifications completed prior to January 1st 2013, including all BSA, SGB, ISA, ASI qualification holders are required to attend the courses, however Surf coaches that have attended ISA Level 1 Surf Coach Awards since January 1st 2013 are not required to do so.  All current SGB coach members qualification will still be valid as are any renewed during 2013 whilst we role out the updates and incorporate the material into future courses. However, the attendance of the Surfing GB upgrade module will become a pre-requisite for membership for all renewals as from 2014. Therefore, we encourage you to attend these upgrades whilst they are free.
    • The Joint ISA/SGB Level 1 Surf Coach Award will become the only stand-alone basic surf coach award recognised by Surfing GB, the National Governing body designate for surfing in Great Britain, from January 2014
    • The Joint ISA/SGB Surf Coach Upgrade will be offered free from a selection of venues during May and June 2013. These sessions will last approximately 3 hours and will usually be conducted in the evening.
