The 2013 season kicked off in great fashion over the weekend in Porthcawl, Wales with the first stop of the 2013 Rip Curl Grom Search presented by POSCA!

With the start of the new and exciting relationship between Surfing GB and Rip Curl came some challenging forecasts, which had the organisers scratching their heads. After close consideration, and much to the delight of the UK’s frothing Grom’s, the contest was called ON and both organisers and surfers alike braced themselves for an action packed weekend on the South Coast of Wales.

Saturday morning saw 2-3ft waves rolling into the bay accompanied by offshore winds as the Grom’s lined the shore line awaiting their chance to strut their stuff. Competition commenced mid morning and the judges had their work cut out immediately as we saw some thrilling battles in the early heats of the boys Under 16 & 14 divisions. As the level of Surfing grew the waves unfortunately didn’t as the event fell victim to the notorious dropping tide lull at Porthcawl and the event went on hold to wait for the turn of the tide. Luckily POSCA’s presence at the event meant that everyone had plenty of activities to keep themselves entertained with mural walls, professional artists on hand to POSCA up any of the Groms boards!

The tide turned and the ocean awoke from its untimely nap as the surfers re-entered the water and competition re-commenced. As the music echoed around the popular Welsh surf spot spectators watched in ore as surfers as young as 8 years old shredded their way through the waves, making many of the adult spectators awkwardly compare their surfing abilities to those of the super Grom’s on show. ‘The level of Surfing here today is truly outstanding, we run these events to give the Grom’s the opportunity to show what they can do on national stages, but to see everyone here so stoked on Surfing its just awesome!’ said Sean Harris of Rip Curl UK.

Finals commenced early evening as event organisers reached the decision to run the event to completion on Saturday with Sundays unsuitable forecast in mind. The high tide created a natural amphitheatre for the business end of the event as the atmosphere grew to an electric fever and the Surfers responded with explosive surfing.

FFION HUGHES took the Under 12’s Girls title and fascinating exchanges in the boys Under 12’s final saw SETH WILLIAM MORRIS come out on top with a 14.5 heat total to seal the victory.

The Girls Under 14 final saw a mature performance from Welsh surfer BETHAN LEWIS which pushed her ahead of her competitors and to a well deserved victory. The Boys final was an incredibly tight battle as two of the UK’s up and coming junior surfers JOE HARDING and LIAM MURRAY STROUT battled away but pipping his competition to the title by 0.07 was LIAM MURRAY STROUT.

On top of the awesome prizes from Rip Curl, POSCA, FCS and Gorilla the Under 16’s boys and girls categories hold special value. The format of the search allows a Surfer to take their best two results from the three 2013 Search events giving them an overall ranking from which two boys and girls victors are identified and earning them a place at the European finals later in the year. So as the light faded on Porthcawl the hooters rang out and the day came to a close in style. Starting their campaigns with a bang saw close friends PEONY KNIGHT and FLORA LAWTON trade waves in a thrilling Girls Under 16 final but ultimately PEONY’s style and innovative approach saw her take 1st place! The Boys Under 16 final was again a fascinating battle but one that confirmed that the future of UK surfing is safe hands as WILL BAILEY chucked buckets around the bay and MAX PAYNE stylishly carved his way around the high tide peaks. The closing stages were intense but with a heat total of 13.83 and taking the title by 0.43 over 2nd place was MAX PAYNE who now moves onto the second search event in Croyde with maximum points.
