In recent weeks the wheels of progression have been firmly in motion behind the scenes at two of the UK’s largest Surf organisations, Surfing GB and Rip Curl. The combination of the two organisations centres around the operation of the Rip Curl Grom Search events. In previous years the events have provided junior surfers around the UK with unique and fantastic opportunities to compete on a national stage whilst receiving free coaching, goodie bags and the chance to compete on a European and global stage. 2012 was a pivotal year for Surfing GB as it strived to take Surfing in the UK to a new level whilst entertaining the desires of the UK’s thriving competitive surf scene by throwing a selection of successful and diverse competitive events. As SGB’s attentions turned to 2013 the organisation evaluated the successes and failures of 2012, learnt some lessons, and began to put plans together to create another exciting and memorable year of events.
Rip Curl is an organisation that shares in SGB’s forward thinking attitude and also recognises the UK’s growing pool of Surfing ability, especially in the GROM department. With all that in mind the SGB are proud to announce that they will be operating the 2013 Rip Curl Grom Search supported by POSCA. The search will comprise of three events taking place at Porthcawl in Wales, Croyde in North Devon and finally coming to a climax at Watergate Bay, Cornwall. The goal of the events is to not only identify a selection of the UK’s best junior surfers but to promote enjoyment and provide opportunity to young surfers with a desire to compete. A combination of results from all three events will identify 2 male and 2 female surfers whom will then go on to represent the UK in the European finals where they will compete against the successful surfers from other Grom Searches around Europe and battle to earn a place in the Rip Curl Grom Search World Finals later this year.
Short board surfers eligible for age categories under 16, 14 & 12’s are invited to take part in these events and should expect to not only have a great days surfing but to receive free coaching from some of the UK’s top junior surf coaches. There will be Rip Curl goodie bags for all competitors and POSCA pens (Co-sponsor of both Rip Curl & SGB) will be in attendance with lots of hands on activities for the Grom’s and their family and friends.
The first of this exciting series of events will be held at Rest Bay, Porthcawl in Wales on 13th & 14th April.
Further information will be released for each event and all SGB events can be viewed at www.surfinggb.com/calender
