Stand Up Paddle Board Team GB
The four man GB team have returned from the The ISA World StandUp Paddle (SUP) and Paddleboard Championship held in Miraflores, Peru.
No one – from the athletes to the coaches to the hosting country – quite knew what to expect from the inaugural ISA World StandUp Paddle (SUP) and Paddleboard Championship.
But following a traditional Parade of Nations, which took place around Parque Kennedy in downtown Miraflores, the event and over 100 athletes from 17 countries took to the water and 4 guys from the UK were there flying the the flag for British surfing.
The GB team was made up of:
Gareth Grant: BSUPA 2011Surf Champion,
Mark Stater: BSUPA 2011 12’6” Race Champion,
Jim Richardson: Winner of Mens Surf Expression (Watergate Bay 2011)
John Harvey from Jersey 2nd Overall 14’ Race Division 2011
“The International Surfing Association laid on the most professional contest I have attended, with a fantastic opening ceremony through the streets of Miraflores, with the parade area lined by locals and tourists. I was happy with my performance, securing 14th place in the surfing event out the 32 entered. Our boards got stuck in Madrid until the eve of the contest, so our preparation was hindered!” said Gareth Grant the 2011 British Stand Up Paddle surf champion.
Although the UK team did not enter all the events, not having prone paddlers or women for the surfing or racing divisions, they ended up with an overall ranking of 12th out of the 17 countries, based just on the events would have ranked 8th in the world. All in all a great week for the UK team, and put the UK Stand UP Paddle team on the world stage.
